The Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA) is all about making sure that our children and young people know and understand their rights as global citizens and respect the rights of others. The award centres around making sure that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is known and understood by all students and that students fully understand their own responsibilities in making sure that other people’s rights are not abused or neglected.  In prioritising a balanced awareness of Rights and Responsibilities in this way we are confident that our students will continue through their childhood, adolescence and then enter adulthood as well-rounded and successful citizens.

Article 29 of the UNCRC underlines our vision as a school:

“Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.”

The initiative was officially launched to our children in November 2015 when we discussed the award with the school council and school. We hope these values and qualities will be useful to parents and carers in establishing a consistent message to our young people at home and at school.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has been made law in the UK.  Please have a look at this at  www.unicef.org/crc .

We recently identified what we believe are the key characteristics of an outstanding global citizen.  We identified the following qualities amongst others:

Enthusiasm
Fairness
Inquisitiveness
Global awareness
Confidence
Ability to teach others
Ability to listen
Responsibility
Going the extra mile
Knowledge
Self-belief/Optimism
Open-mindedness
Awareness of own weaknesses
Respect/Consideration of others
Aspiration
Independence

As staff, we are committed to preparing young people to be outstanding global citizens who demonstrate these qualities in their every-day lives and thereby go on to make an exceptional contribution to our world.  It is with this in mind that Little Hill Primary School is committed to achieving recognition from UNICEF as a ‘RIGHTS RESPECTING SCHOOL’.
